Miguel Cabrera Arrested, DUI Charges

Baseball player Miguel Cabrera was arrested in the late hours of yesterday because he was driving while under the influence of alcohol, according to Florida police. It seems that alcohol problems continue to Cabrera.

The 26 year old slugger was arrested 11 miles southeast of Lakeland, where the Tigers train during spring. Cabrera wasn’t supposed to start training along other position players until Saturday.  Police found Cabrera in a car with a smoking engine near Fort Piece and when they approached he had evident signs of being drunk, this was confirmed when he took a swig from a bottle of Scotch.  To make matters worse, Cabrera didn’t cooperate.

Teammate Carlos Guillen said: “It’s hard, He’s a really good friend. I know he was working hard in the winter to have a good season this year.”

According to the report filed by the police Cabrera kept saying: “Do you know who I am? You don’t know anything about my problems,” while resisting arrest. He also refused to take a breath alcohol test.

Cabrera was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting arrest without violence.  He was released early today after posting $1,350 bond.

Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski picked up Cabrera after the incident.  No comments from his part.

Wisconsin Protests Continue Today (VIDEO)

Wisconsin protests have entered yet another day, causing the cancellation of classes in a dozen school districts. Protests started after a legislative committee made minor changes to the budget plan of Scott Walker.

The bill causing the protests would take away collective bargaining rights from Wisconsin public workers and they will also have to pay much more for benefits.

The amendment has been criticized for being very little. Democrat Representative Schilling described the amendment as “Lipstick on a pig. I wouldn’t even call this lipstick on a pig. It’s chapstick on a pig.”

The big number of protesters is really surprising and something America hasn’t seen in years. Republican Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan compared the protest to the Egypt protests: “He’s (Gov. Scott Walker) getting riots, it’s like Cairo’s moved to Madison these days,” Ryan said Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“He’s basically saying I want you public workers to pay half of what our private sector counter parts are, and he’s getting riots,” Ryan said. “People should be able to express their way, but we’ve got to get this deficit and debt under control in Madison if we want to have a good business climate and job creation in Wisconsin.”

Julio Garcia NCIS Accident Ends in Tragedy

Production of the popular TV series NCIS has been suspended until further notice following the accident and subsequent death of 52-year-old Julio Garcia, a security guard of the show.

According to reports, Garcia was on a set of NCIS tending a staging area when he was suddenly hit by a van whose driver lost control of the vehicle.  Apparently the driver, 60-year-old Ralph Blunt, suffered from a condition that caused his reckless driving.

Upon learning about the tragic news, CBS released a statement saying the following:

“Everyone at the network, the studio and NCIS is devastated by the news, our hearts grieve for his family and friends for this tragic loss. We are, of course, cooperating with the local authorities in Santa Clarita to help determine what caused this terrible accident.”

“With profound sympathy we mourn the tragic passing of our co-worker and friend. ‘NCIS’ is a family. And, as with any family, we are deeply saddened by this unexpected loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones.”

Adrianne Palicki is the New Wonder Woman

NBC has revealed that the star of the upcoming Wonder Woman TV reboot will be “Friday Night Lights” actress Adrienne Palicki. The TV series is in charge of David E. Kelley, who reportedly is still working hard on the script.

Palicki will have also a heavy job in her arms as she will be playing not only wonder Woman but also the alter ego billionaire CEO Diana Themyscira AND Diana’s mousy assistant Diana Prince. That’s right three roles in one show!

It seems Kelly had her in mind for some time, as Palicki was the only one who screen tested for the super heroine role.  According to Deadline.com:

“Palicki won the role of Wonder Woman, closely associated with Lynda Carter, who played Diana Prince in the 1970s series, in a decisive manner – she was the only actress invited to test for it.”

Upon hearing the news, classic Wonder Woman Lynda Carter congratulated her for getting the job. “Congratulations Adrianne!” tweeted Carter yesterday.

Wilson Holloway Dead of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer

Sad news in the World of Sports, as we have learned that former University of Tulsa football player Wilson Holloway, 22, has died yesterday in Oklahoma City after losing the battle against cancer.

News of Holloway’s dead was confirmed by Tulsa’s athletics department spokesman Don Tomkalski.

Wilson Holloway was diagnosed in 2008 with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a disease that according to PubMed Health: “is a cancer of lymph tissue found in the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, bone marrow, and other sites.” After following cancer treatments during that year, he played six games but then cancer reappeared in September 2008, prompting a second round of chemotherapy cancer treatments.

In January 2009, Holloway was given the Courage Award from the Football Writers Association of America after beating the disease twice. Back then he said: “I’m so optimistic and so upbeat, I never really let it get me down. My whole mentality on it is if I let it get to me, then it’s winning,” adding “I just kind of went about my life and did everything I wanted to do, and didn’t let it slow me down.”

A memorial service for Holloway has been set for Friday at 6pm in Oklahoma Christian School.

Our condolences go to his family and friends.

Auburn Oak Trees Poisoned on Purpose

According to Auburn University, some poisoned on purpose some trees located at Toomer’s Corner, a place known to be a celebration spot for celebrations.  Just a month ago on Jan. 10 Tigers fans gathered to celebrate their national football championship.

The University, after taking soil samples, discovered the presence of a tree-killer herbicide in elevated amounts around two trees, which now are beyond being saved.  A day before the testing, a man had called a radio show to say that he in fact put herbicide on those trees. The caller, who identified as “Al from Dadeville” said:

“The weekend after the Iron Bowl, I went to Auburn, Ala., because I live 30 miles away, and I poisoned the Toomer’s trees,”, adding that he used Spike 80DF, also known as tebuthiuron.

“We will take every step we can to save the Toomer’s oaks, which have been the home of countless celebrations and a symbol of the Auburn spirit for generations of Auburn students, fans, alumni and the community,” university President Jay Gogue said in a statement. ”

We are assessing the extent of the damage and proceeding as if we have a chance to save the trees,” said Gary Keever, an Auburn University professor of horticulture and a member of Auburn’s Tree Preservation Committee. “We are also focused on protecting the other trees and shrubs in Samford Park. At this level the impact could be much greater than just the oaks on the corner, as Spike moves through the soil to a wide area.”

Police is investigating the incident.
